What the model reads. In the NFL — the lab's original method, carried over unchanged in the takeover — quarterback play is priced first, then opponent-adjusted efficiency (EPA/play), points ratings and Elo over the full season, blended 60/40 with the market, and adjusted daily for injuries, inactives, weather and line moves, with every adjustment logged and explained. The newer sections run the same discipline on each sport's core numbers: win percentage, points for and against per game, home advantage, and — in the college sports — poll ranking and last season's final form until current-season data takes over.
Confidence tiers. Every pick carries its win probability in the operation's three tiers: High at 80% or better, Medium from 56–79%, and Coin-flip at 55% and under. The published grade breaks the record out by tier, so a hot streak on coin flips can't dress up as skill. The NFL's problem tier is High (1–2) — it's labeled that way on the board, not hidden.
The weekly rhythm (NFL). An early prediction posts as soon as the week opens — a full week out. It is then adjusted daily as injuries, inactives, weather and lines move, and every adjustment is logged with its reason; nothing moves silently. The day before each game day, the full report locks the slate. After every game, the play-by-play is audited against the prediction and the game gets a verdict: Right (the priced edge is what decided it), Variance (the read was sound and the breaks decided it), Model miss (the model itself was wrong), or Process failure (the operation broke its own rules). Thursday's opener graded Right — Green Bay's priced line-play edge produced six sacks and the win, exactly the case the lock was built on.
How grading works. Picks are straight-up winners, locked and timestamped before each game. After finals, results post to this board and the record updates — wins, losses, tier splits, and a Brier score for probability accuracy. Backtests are always labeled RETROSPECTIVE and never mixed into the live record (the NFL's Weeks 1–6 backtest: 59–33–1, retrospective only).
The standing record. NFL: 8–6 (57.1%) — High 1–2, Medium 6–2, Coin-flip 1–2 — inherited from the original board, with Week 8 at 1–0 after Thursday's graded Packers win. Every other sport starts at 0–0 with today's board and builds its own grade from day one. The same picks, with the same grades attached, also run in Moosed News sports coverage.
Picking & grading from day one, ready or not. Every sport in the lab is picked and publicly graded from the moment its season is live — the lab does not wait until a full stats pipeline is finished. Where a section is still running a basic method, that method is labeled on its board (for example, college basketball’s day-one picks run on last season’s form plus home court), and the same lock rules, tier discipline and audit verdicts — Right, Variance, Model miss, Process failure — apply from the first game.
The point of the lab. This is an accuracy test, not a betting service. Nobody here wagers on these picks; the lab exists to measure, in public, how close a transparent model can get to real life.
